Kelly Farrell, a talented young designer, left the big agency world with a mission — deliver strategic, impeccable design with responsive, personal client service. Since then she’s moved dR into the national market while developing a specialty in creating healthy brands, especially healthcare related brands. dR offers every client the personal attention and flexibility a smaller firm can provide, with access to an award-winning branding and design team. President and Founder

Kelly Farrell has a unique talent for getting straight to the special. It’s her specialty, and is the heart of how designRoom approaches branding.

Kelly learned design and branding working in advertising. She worked as an Art Director, Designer and Account Representative for a host of national brands. But the future she saw for herself included a more passionate approach to the work, and more personal engagement with clients. And no bosses.

So designRoom was born. One room. One designer. And lots of room to grow.

Today Kelly takes care of clients across the U.S. She has led designRoom to become an established, award winning branding and design firm. With her innate ability to see the right solution and a passionate desire to help clients to reach their goals, Kelly keeps things moving forward.

In truth, Kelly has really become a brand advocate specializing in helping behavioral health organizations. She speaks across the country on the importance of branding in behavioral health, specifically on how branding can unify an organization internally, amplify their brand promise, and help them move in a sustainable, positive direction. Oh, and there are award-winning logos, too.

Personally, Kelly is affiliated with and active in a variety of regional, and national professional organizations. These include the Cleveland Advertising Association (AAF), the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA), and Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) Cleveland. She also serves as a Board Member for Signature Health, a regional behavioral health organization, and is a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).

Kelly’s personal mission is to build healthy brands for organizations that help people, and make everyone feel like a part of her family. (It’s a big family). She knows that if she does more of that, then more people will find the help that they need. That’s real branding, for real for life.

Creative Director

Chad is the Creative Director, overseeing the development of virtually every original design. Chad studied photography in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has a degree in photo illustration from Ohio University. In 1991 he worked with Reuben and Company as a photo assistant before joining designRoom as a designer the following year. Chad has received numerous national awards, has shared in his team’s many Addy Awards and has had his work published in several international design publications.

Chad is experienced in all phases of creative design, including concept development, art direction, photography, typography, print production and website design. Chad’s specialties are photo illustration and identity development. His unique infrared photography has been shown in numerous galleries around northeast Ohio. He is an avid baseball man, a crafty pitcher with speed and movement on his fastball and played on championship teams in the Roy Hobbs League.

Joe Miller

Chief Strategy Officer

Joe delivers copy, generates concepts and helps determine strategy. He’s been doing it since 1991 when he started working with a small downtown Cleveland marketing firm. Joe joined the designRoom team as a freelance writer in 1993. He has an annoying knack for finding the core of a problem and the heart of a solution. He also makes the best coffee in the office.

In early 2008 he joined the Marketing & Communications team at the Ohio Lottery. While there, Joe led the team that developed and implemented the Lottery’s first-ever social media initiative and crafted the Ohio Policy and Procedures and Terms of Use that guided all the Lottery’s social media involvement. In addition, he created a Winners are Everywhere campaign and managed the creative agency responsible for its implementation.

Joe is also a professional musician and educator and occasional composer. He’s the Jazz Trumpet faculty and Jazz Combo conductor at Cleveland State University and has performed all over the world.

Client Relationship Manager

Kimberly Hemesath has been on the designRoom team since 2013. She has managed our studio, now she manages pretty much every aspect of our client relationships. What does that mean?

It means Kimberly cares for the day-to-day well being of designRoom clients. Without them, we are nothing. So without her, we’re in trouble. Client relationships mean everything, so Kimberly has a big job, which she performs with determination, patience, and a smile.

Kimberly will guide client work from proposal through to completion, serving as a liaison between client and creative team. She will ensure everyone on the team understands exactly what a client wants — determining goals and objectives, personal and organizational preferences, needs, and budgets.  Kimberly will also guide creative and planning presentations and timelines, as well as completing creative briefs.

Most of all, Kimberly makes sure that all work flows smoothly from our clients, into our studio, and back to our clients, meeting every objective.

A graduate of Miami University of Ohio, Kimberly earned a degree in Marketing and a minor in Psychological Pathology. She’s worked at Yelp and the Phoenix New Times. She loves chocolate (required of all dR staff), but not coffee. Which is just weird.

Digital Design Director

Shaun is our Digital Design Director. He directs the design and development of all our digital work and positions the creative in all digital channels. Shaun offers our clients more than fifteen years of digital experience. Extremely detail-oriented and design-focused, Shaun always looks to take design to the next level. Before arriving at dR, Shaun worked as Senior Art Director at Adcom and Art Director at Rosetta. He has worked on several Fortune 500 brands, including Sherwin-Williams, Marriott International, and Rigid Tools.

Outside of work Shaun is an avid hiker with his dog Abbie. His life goal is to section hike the entire Appalachian Trail.

Project Manager/Operations Manager

Matt Farrell was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and educated at Case Western Reserve University, taking his B.S. in software engineering and then earning an M.B.A. with a concentration in Marketing.

After college, Matt worked for Guardian Automated Systems, Rockwell Automation and Rockwell Software in various software engineering and product marketing roles. During this time, Matt also pursued private business interests and acted as a consultant for designRoom, coming aboard in a more active role in 2001.

Matt is especially valuable in strategic planning and tracking all the components of branding and marketing projects. He helps the branding team from before a project begins to after it’s completed.

Matt makes it a point to include a little fun in his time in the office… he’s the one that managed to put up the five nerf basketball hoops (4 small and one main court in the great room) around the office. Or maybe it’s because he’s like 6’4″ and likes to dunk.

In addition to his dR duties, Matt is active in the Perry Local Schools and coaches youth sports. Give him a problem. He’ll solve it.

History

In the early nineties the agency scene was different than it is now. Clients had larger budgets. Media mostly meant broadcast and print. Brands told consumers what to think and feel. Client needs didn’t always come first. Kelly Farrell sat in the middle of it, a young designer, sketching and dreaming, unsatisfied with the status quo. But she didn’t just dream.
